Title: Linux and passwords and stuff
Post by: Sean on April 10, 2013, 12:09:49 PM
Already posted this as a reply to another topic on connection issues, but I figured I'd better make a brand new topic, so here goes:

After getting disconnected from the server today, I can't get back on.
Whenever I try to login, it gives me the following message:

"Login failed

Client is not recieving UDP messages from the server.
Please make sure that UDP port 4234 is not blocked
[OK] "

I've made sure that I have the right port open in the firewall setting, but the problem still occurs.
Have there been any updates?

Sorry you are having trouble.

The real issue is that MS Windows sucks and so I must kill and restart the process every so often to reset the networking, apparently.
MS Windows sucks
^Dis.

A note: Dell computers are extra reliable. My dad leaves his on 24/7 and never has a problem. We were able to afford a touch-screen screen computer. (no tower). The resolution is ginormous, and it's processor is phenomenal. (The res is around 3000x2000 and the processor is either an i3 or an i5 at around 3.0 ghz.) It's fun to use the touch-screen on. We even tried windows 8 on it since 8 supports touch screen. Fuuun

I build my own computers.  This is not a hardware issue but a "Windows Sucks" issue.  The hardware is cranking away like a champ running a horrible operating system.

So, it's the OS designer's problem, not the fantastic hardware designer's problem?
Edit: It's the Window's update designer's problem* hahaha

Having built in excess of 30 computers in my lifetime, I have trouble seeing how the hardware could be responsible for the windows desktop crashing while everything else works fine.  Meanwhile, I have other computers that I've built that run Linux and measure up time in years.  The last time I had to reboot my main server was when the power went out from a hurricane.

And I can almost guess the desktop you were using, too.  :)

Linux doesn't "look" a particular way since you can put any number of window managers on it that significantly change how it works.  KDE is like Windows.  Gnome is like a Mac... etc.

I am actually a recent convert to Linux, from Windows. I realized my silliness when I read "In The Beginning... Was The Command Line" by Neal Stephenson. Fascinating read, if a bit outdated.

...Yeah, off-topic...

I haven't switched yet, I just really want to.

I'll probably go with a dual-boot for a while so I can pick my way through the textbook I got from the library, then fully switch once I know my way around.

I don't want too... you can't play every game on Linux can you? D:... Plus, I'm used to Windows. Windows are for gamers, that's who I am. I invented gaming, so Paul, give credit where credit is due.

Maybe start with a VM in VirtualBox or something.  Then you can wipe it and start over, roll  back to previous versions, try out different distors in parallel, whatever...

Windows is an unreliable operating system, sold on an outdated concept that only survives because of peer pressure, branding, and fear. Linux is more reliable, has more options, etc.

Rumor has it you can run any .exe on Linux using programs like Wine (Windows emulator, basically). I haven't had such luck yet, though.

If you use your OS as a way to relate to your computer; a way to control it, Linux is better. If you use your computer to show you pictures of a controllable world (games), there's no especial need to switch from Windows.

I'm actually using VirtualBox to run the really old version of Red Hat that came with the textbook, but I haven't yet succeeded in running a Debian ISO.
Soon I'll have more free time to mess around with it.

Windows _was_ for gamers.  It remains to be seen if developers will actually flock to Windows 8.  Seems pretty dismal.

Also, many Steam games are converting to Linux (that weren't already) and the Steam Console will be a linux console.  Linux may become a serious gaming contender... and it's about time, really.

Like it isn't a hog like MS Windows.

Honestly, it kind of depends... but it _does_ do many things more efficiently.  Thread/process management, file handling, networking, etc. are all a little peppier.

Half the reason I run the public server on a Windows box is because I expect to have problems there that I won't have on Linux... and I figure most (or at least a good number of) Mythruna server runners will be doing it from Windows.

I wouldn't say Windows OS is a memory hog, but it has a bunch of unnecessary services that run in the background. Besides, memory isn't that expensive.

This felt like a good point to pitch in at, even though the topic seems to have gone, eh, slightly off topic...

Wine has worked like a charm for me, many times over - games like Warcraft 3, Half Life 2, Portal 2, and Anno 1404, just to name a few, ran just fine without me even having to tweak any settings specifically for them (on Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit). Though very old ones, or very demanding ones - for example Crysis - sometimes don't work at all. Then again, in my experience that particular game seems to run poorly even on its platform of choice, which would be Windows.

Having said that, I'm obligated to caution against trusting too much in Wine compatibility - far from everything'll work well with Wine, at least "out of the box". If one wants to have a closer look, winehq.org tries to maintain a comprehensive list of programs that can or cannot be run with Wine, as well as instructions for how to get them working better.

Also, my pedantic side compels me to point out that Wine Is Not an Emulator, at least not in the strictest sense - in fact, that's what the name purportedly stands for. "True" emulation might have greatly impaired Wine's performance; ironically, as it is now some programs or parts of programs can actually sometimes perform better under Wine than on Windows.

I've had good luck with Wine as long as the games aren't only DirectX 11 compatible.

...and these games have severely limited their potential market anyway.  Though I guess XP is reaching end-of-life soon and I will cry a little bit.  Though maybe Linux will be a good enough gaming platform by then that I can still play games and keep my work crappy Win7 laptop for the other stuff that's windows-only.

Have you worked with windows 7 Paul?

The Windows 7 file explorer makes me want to hit things.  It seems like the middle mouse wheel always works in the window I don't want it to... but worse yet, things jump around a lot while it decides how it wants to lay out and some of my clicks end up in the wrong place.  Sometimes I can click something once... sometimes I have to click it repeatedly.

The XP file explorer was pretty dismal.  I didn't realize it could get worse.  MS doesn't seem to understand multithreading a UI even slightly.

Why not reset it?

I keep a pad of paper on my desk.  Most of the time the writing is unintelligible and the passwords are just reminders... plus the organization sort of defies normal reason.

It was weird because it seems like the day after I decided I had too many passwords in my head to remember and started writing them down, suddenly I have 20+ passwords to keep track of.  I guess starting a business will do that to you.

Seriously, if sites would remind me what the password requirements were when I go to login, I'd remember them 90% of the time.  I don't know how many times I get to the password reset screen and see the restrictions and then suddenly remember.  "Oh, yeah, this is the one that wants upper case and numbers but won't allow special characters..."

I have over 50 logins between all my personal and work stuff. I don't reset it because I'm auto logged on 3 computers. I switched browsers on my phone and cant seem to get the log in right. I know it is a regular pswd because I didnt record it and I have logged in with several other pcs. Ill get it sooner or later.

I had this problem on my mobile as well.  I ended up going back and logging in from a browser somewhere else to remember the password because for some reason doing it on the mobile never worked out.  Once I knew what it was then it worked fine, of course. :)

Play-By-Post. MCForums. Pretty fun over there, I have a Herobrine RP... I think I should bring in Brinehero sometime; you know, as an extra evil guy- whatever they're called. . . .
Enemies, nemesis, hostile, ect.
Have fun modding that :)

I KNEW SOMEONE WOULD SEND ME THAT IMGTFY LINK XD
LMGTFY. it's an acronym.

BTW Paul: Off Topic: Any reason why my 'Total Time Logged In 1 Days, 17 hours and 33 minutes.' won't go any higher? It's minutes goes up by one for like every day or two :P
Total time that you have this forum pulled up.

I became a moderator... yesterday? Or day before? In any case, I promise to be nice.

Either he meant moderating (the RP), or he doesn't know that Play-by-Post is done on forums, and isn't a video game.

I'm on a fantasy PBP RP site (http://www.santharia.com) as Ryvic Darkveil (on both forums). It might be a bit more intense (writing effort-wise) than you'd be used to on the MineCraft Forums, but since everyone puts so much effort both into RPing and developing the world, it's a pretty incredible site. If you check it out, make an account on the RP forum and shoot me a PM, or just set yourself down and start reading some of the entirely-fictional-yet-fascinating histories and descriptions of creatures, etc.

Oh. Maybe, I'll think about it. I have quite a few people I RP with on the MC Forums and we get pretty Intense. One of the best one's 'died' and I haven't heard from him in awhile, so that's sad. We were pretty much the best RPers there, AKA, we posted tons and tons of words per post while everyone else just has 1-10 sentences at a time :P....

It always is a bit of a reality-check to realize that internet people are both real and mortal.

I hope I didn't imply that you didn't put much effort into your writing, it's just that most RPs I see don't have much effort put into them. Do you have a link to one of your RPs? I might want to check it out.

When you say "were" do you mean you don't RP any more? I haven't been able to for a while, either, though I hope to get back into it.

Oh, no, I don't take offense xD... If you've seen the Rpers there... well, you should get it xD

But no, I still RP! It's just since he left everything's been kinda slow, so I can't post big replies. He knew exactly how to make posts that you can reply back too rather than "Right, let's go!" and wait till they make the next move. Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of other good RPers like Snivy, Bawb, Lavul... but they don't post as big.

Yeah, this is my most active RP http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1327830-herobrine-the-dark-lord-arrives-rp-accepting-its-not-what-you-think/ you can also check out http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1600801-teknonicks-game-hub-find-all-my-rps-characters-and-more/page__st__60 (My Game Hub) to see a list of other RPs I RP in.

Are all good ones. That fellowship is fun; a friend did it (Bawb). WIR, well that's just plain awesome, but it's been slow recently... thanks to Tarantula dying or whatever. Then the last one is the one Tarantula made himself; I was the first to comment in 2013 (The RP started 2012!) so I saved it :3.... It bloomed into an awesome RP with many things to do, but only the two of us played; the exception of a few randoms for a post or two.

NOTE: Don't be put off by the Herobrine RP. The first posts are pretty bad and was when I was still new.... It's matured a lot since then, and it's NOT MINECRAFT! for all of those who instantly assume 'MC Fourms... Herobrine.. Blocks!' :3.. lol So many do that, ya-know?
