Maybe it's less depressing if you think about the fact that they aren't just little images but entire little sets of drawing commands describing how to make a letter.  It's like hundreds of little SVG files... which is also why they can easily scale up to any size, including 99 pt. Wink

The scaling is kind of what made me curious, because at larger sizes, their quality doesn't drop. I always suspected they started with a really large image and scaled it down. If you'd like an example of how I work with fonts for my games:

I wonder what 10,000 pt. Font looks like now. Are the smooth curves still smooth even at that point? Is it somehow not blurred on the edges?

True type fonts like most OSes use these days are not images.  They are descriptions of shapes.  You can scale them up as large as you want and you will always have a hard edge.  Just like you can scale an SVG image and always have hard edges.

They aren't sets of pixels, they're shapes.

FNT files are different.  Those are "bitmap fonts" because it is simpler to draw bitmap fonts than to have the entire truetype/postscript apparatus to draw a letter.

In the case of bitmap fonts, it's best to pick font resolutions that you will actually use with minimal scaling.  Scaling large to small or small to large by big amounts will produce artifacts... though scaling up is much worse than scaling down.
