Title: A little more UI work...
Post by: pspeed on January 01, 2013, 04:13:19 AM
Not really ready for a facebook upload but I will post it here because I think it's cool:

This is the start of what the world creation screen will look like.

Eventually there will be more to it but for now I will get functional by letting the user enter a name and a seed.

Eventually there will be random switches and dials (that effectively set the seed but in a more abstract way) and then the map-rings will spin until they align with the new world's map.

The lighting in this one is also animated and moving to this UI from the other one is just an animated camera movement.  They both exist in the same 3D space.  It will all tie together at some point... you'll see. :)

It's surprisingly easy for me (in my code) to pull one of these maps out of a world fractal.  Actually, it's easier than generating the terrain.  I was doing it even as a preview in my AI tester stuff.  It's not 100% accurate because it doesn't take into account all the things that get added after the fractal but it's definitely good enough for a preview image.

The idea is to map out the world only enough to know where the spawn location will be and then center the preview map around that.  Once you lock it in and then go to the character creation screen then the world will start generating on disk for real... finding the starter towns and stuff.  (When those are implemented properly, I mean).

For now, I just needed a form so I show a hint at what the UI will be and will add a simple form for putting in the seed and name... then proceed to character creation which will be similarly limited.  But now I will have a place to expand things.

Do you know how "customizable" the characters will be?

 please help
1.) take a picture (press F2 in mythruna to do so, it will be saved in your mythruna directory)
2.) go to an image hosting service like imgur.com
3.) copy the link + the .jpg don't just copy like imgur.com/image copy imgur.com/image.jpg
4.) put inside of the [img] tags [img]<link>[ /img]

Then do step 1, then at the bottom of a post it says "attach file" or something like that, but the image can only be so big, you have to shrink it with an image-editing program.

One of the fun things about the way I'm designing this GUI is that I can put a fly-cam back in and walk around.

It occurred to me that some of these might make good desktop backgrounds:

http://i.imgur.com/VJBmE.png

Those are kind of small, though.  Maybe I will make some new ones when the rest of the UI is built out.

I can't wait until the rest of the game is converted over. :)  I'm getting tired of playing with menus. :)

im sure these menus will open the way for many other things, like character customization  :)

Thanks.  I sweat a lot over these little things. :)

When going with minimalist set design it's sort of a requirement, though.

Since there seems to be questions arising because of this, I will explain what "nexortical engine" is.  :)

It's a nearly nonsense term I made up for the "technology" that allows you to travel to the worlds of Mythruna.  A Nexortical Engine Console is what you use to dial in coordinates to a specific world. (ie: set the seed in real life terms)

I wanted to conjure the idea that there is some massive machine somewhere allowing this to happen and that there are potentially hundreds/thousands/?? of consoles that provide access to this power.

It's purposely vague so that your imagination can fill in whatever it wants.  You starting user interface starts off with a desk, a nexortical console, a stack of world journals (where each world's characters live), etc..  There may also end up being little slips of paper and post-it-note style messages lying around in the UI... sort of obvious easter eggs that help set the mood.

Like a little slip of paper sticking out of a book that says,
Quote
Just because the council cleared your actions,
it doesn't mean that they condone them,
   -M

Little bits of color like that... along with the tattered origin message from the web site and maybe some other cryptic stuff like that.

It's like the glowing purple swirling light in the above pic... it doesn't have to mean anything beyond the setting and mood.

I'm playing Farcry 3 now and while playing im thinking how much I like the Assassin's Creed 3 idea of a VR within a game. FC3 is ok with its open world and guns but I felt more immersed in AC3. I think it is because of the Animus idea of a VR withen the game.

The point is I like the idea you present with the "nexortical engine".

Run It..

I uploaded another video showing some more of the UI that I got fleshed out.

I didn't think I was going to get this part of the interface working during this round of changes but I was inspired the other night and it went in pretty smoothly.

as soon as that new build is out, im going to force my dad to watch me make some new worlds :) he has doubts about any new game, but he will like this one. guarenteed.

The graphical detail is amazing. I got excited just by watching it. Any estimate whether this will be done? Also, thank goodness the WiiU has youtube supported in its internet browser.

It looks awesome!

Two things:

It has a little sound skip on all but one of the runs. Is that just from the video recording?

The color/font on the menu buttons is a little uninspiring. Purple and light blue just... Eh... Maybe more of a black ink that lights up to a fiery gold (think the ring in LoTR) I don't know if you were planning that further on, but it's something that's bothered me. :P

Lol.  I can't win.  When I first showed you guys the menus people complained that they didn't look faded enough. ;)

I think they're fine.  There's only so much I can do with faded text. :)

Thanks.  As a former graphic designer wanna-be, I try to keep the colors consistent to purpose.  So by color you can easily distinguish regular information text from clickable text, etc..  And there are only so many options when trying to display a lot of information.

And yeah, I though the contrast of those colors with the aged yellows/oranges/browns gave it kind of an enchanted look.  Regular text in books, etc. will be drab and boring but clickable things will pop a little.

Yep, if you copy it down you can run it in a server game to generate that world... then copy that server's mythruna.db over to use in single player.  I think there are instructions elsewhere.

You can also modify the world.info file directly and then delete all of the node sub-directories... but the server approach is easier, I think.

Don't worry, I can dive into trouble and solve it myself. I'll take the hard faster way. (Without asking questions)

Edit: That was easier than I thought. It was like 1-2-3. Without the 3.
