Title: Whens the Next Update?
Post by: Teknonick on May 19, 2012, 10:34:59 AM
I was wondering, when will the next update be out? I mean big update, including ai, or weapons, or health, or physics, or somthing else big?

Or an update with new blocks! :3

Don't mean to be buggy (Trips on a bug) but, :S

AI will take me at least two more weeks to get something game ready... probably more.  And I still won't have actual creature models to use unless I use some stiff-wooden off the shelf models.  (which I may do)

I've got the basic planner written.  Next will be to get it into a 2D prototyping app and hooked up to the entity system that Mythruna uses.  This will let me (and potentially others) prototype some of the AI actions that an NPC can perform, the higher-lever goal selection stuff/coordination, and the base goals that nearly all creatures will have (eat, sleep, "work").

There are not any new "quick" features on the horizon though I have a long to-do list of things.  Sometimes some things bubble to the surface and I implement them and cut a release.  I have no definite release plans at the moment.

I'm at sort of a critical phase where a lot of the major systems need to start getting integrated or I won't be able to make significant progress.  And then after that, everything sort of snowballs and I'll be releasing often.  AI is one of those things because the data and decision model can be used for other things (for example, pathfinding for an NPC is not so different than pathfinding for a river.)

AI, Physics, Creature Animation, and Combat... are all sort of major blockers right now.  Any one of those has a minimum of three weeks of work before something significant shows in the releases... and in many cases, visible features would require some or all of them to be working.

Bottom line: it's probably at least a month before a new release barring any major issues that arise.  And it's unclear what that release will contain other than mortared rock.

Thanks for the post, and it seems that most of the main features for the game will be coming soon (And I mean a month or so soon) hopefully.

Even if nothing is released soon, I know it will come sometime, and this news just got my hopes up, that it wont be 2-4 years xD!

Anyways, I get what your saying about how it will snowball...

And Water physics... Already seems better than how, "The Other Square Game" does it!

I'm still trying to get close to an alpha state in six months.

I thought the same thing two months ago but it's still my target. :)  Eventually "six months" will become "five months", etc..

I really like reading about the progress and planning of this game. I really look forward to crafting and fighting things.

Thanks!   I try to post a few things a week just to let everyone know how things are going.  There will be fewer pictures for a while, I guess. :(

Hopefully I will have some AI progress to report soon.

Out of curiosity.. what kind of models do you need? and do you need them to be animated? I might be able to get some from a friend (he's a 3D making dude...)

There is a chicken and an egg problem here, somewhat.  I do definitely want help with models but first I need to make some of my own to better understand how the animation rig should be setup... and to deal with all of the problems I will have importing blender models.

I have a few placeholder models I can pull from for start then I need to spend some quiet-time with Blender and make a model myself at least once.  I have a book, etc. but I just haven't had the focus to sit still with it for more than 20 minutes at a time. :)

you WILL be getting my money, truly. Game concept is solid, LOVE LOVE LOVE the added building touches, many more (and better) blocks to build with, and the game LOOKS better than the other building sandbox block game :) So yes, as you get closer, i WILL donate. Keep up the hard work dude and a lot of us may not post a ton (or at all) but i know myself and a LOT of people i know are watching and waiting for this game :)

/cheers!

Ditto.

Although I have been taking a break from Mythruna to play Diablo3 and work on my own projects, I still check the board  ;)

That is the reason, you will get all your guys after veryone beats the game once though, becuase the game is so much different... Since I bought it, its more of a "Just finish it, so I can see what the story has.. And so my money dosn't go to waste...."

Ive been playing D3. I started a new character afte halfway through to see if the game got any better. I am in the same boat just to finish it. I would not recommend D3.

Agreed... But I still must finish the story! (Even though it has sort of changed...)

I really truly love the concept of what this game will turn into, i left a comment on your youtube vid, and an hour later you responded, this is what people will love! how active and responsive you are to questions asked. i am really happy about this, because other game developers almost completely ignore their players! With this game, you can make up for what other games have failed  to live up to. i cant tell you enough how often my brother and i are playing something and saying "wow. i wish this could be added..." or "wouldnt it be cool if...." it seems like you really understand the imagination that people have, with creating your own vehicles to custom objects because another isnt what you want it to be.

Really, Really looking forward to this, and, you have my money! take it xD
My B-day is coming up, and any money i get, is being saved for the final release of this game.
Excellent work, ill get some hype up for this game if i can!
Keep it up man :D

Paul,
What are you working on this month?

I'm still working on town generation... I got side tracked because I had some day job releases to get out and my wife was out of town for three days.  Only just now getting back into it... which is why the status updates have been lacking lately.

Hardly noticed the lack of updates. Quality games must come out with slowness. Or, at least pack on the players with juicy updates of your progress. Hehe :)

Thanks

I don't know when... but upgrades will be smooth.  They always have been.  You never need to recreate your stuff so far and I don't plan on making changes that would require it.  So you should be safe.

Extract the zip file into a new folder and that should be good enough.

Edit: The reason why you can replace everything is because if you were to replace the lib folder and the client, the only thing that wouldn't be replaced is the launcher executable.

Unzip the zip file just like the first time you installed.  If you want to keep your world then copy the mythruna.db directory over from the old one.

Well, someone (one of his friends I think) introduced my son to MC and he's got into it now. :( I personally have been gaming since the days of the 486 CPU and can't make myself go back to playing games with such low quality graphics. I just don't get the appeal!

Anyway, was wondering if you had any idea when the next update might be?

Keep up the good work.

It's just the creative sense of building what you want that got your son. Haha. It's not like Mythruna doesn't do the same thing right now though. *wink*

Believe me when I say, no one wants this out the door more than I do.

I had a chance to work on it for several days straight starting Wednesday and then I got the flu.  Last night I'm laying in bed (had to move to the guest room in the basement because I was too hot upstairs)... still hot but shivering also... and all I can think about is the next code thing I'm working on.  :)

Making progress today, though.  Got through some bleary eyed design work and now I'm writing actual code.  We'll see of the medicine makes this all look loopy to me later. :)

I haven't noticed a difference between upstairs and downstairs. Must be different at night.
Anyway, glad to hear progress, sad to hear NEXT YEAR. Wish their was some sort of Magic to tell you how much money you will make on your game, so you know if it's work quitting your job to go Full Time or not xD

Don't think Paul said 'next year', he said in the 'new year', which is THIS one.

As for the difference between upstairs and downstairs; simple physics, heat rises.

Looking forward to the next update Paul

Hope you're feeling better

Unzip the zip file just like the first time you installed.  If you want to keep your world then copy the mythruna.db directory over from the old one.
What I always do is just unzip the file in my existing Mythruna directory. You then select, "copy and replace" on Win7. That updates the program without losing any data.

The next version stores worlds in a .Mythruna directory under your user home directory so this won't be an issue in the future.

You can (in that version) move your existing mythruna world into there just by copying or moving it into that .Mythruna directory and it will automatically pick it up.

Hi, I'm new to the forums, and Mythruna as well. I have a copy of the pre-alpha test build. I love the game so far! I was just wandering when the next update is going to be. Since your post here, its been a year. So I was wondering if the game is still being developed or have you kind of abandoned it? I would really like to know because I love the concept and the game so far. Thanks!

Bottom line: it's probably at least a month before a new release barring any major issues that arise.  And it's unclear what that release will contain other than mortared rock.

Thanks!
A lot of the engine had to be re written by the developer Paul Speed to make it more optimal for how he envisions the game and there's been at least one supporter build available since the last public build. The reason why a public build has not been released lately, or why Mythruna hasn't hit alpha yet is because although there has been a lot of development done to the game, it takes a lot of effort to rewrite a huge portion of the game, improve lighting, improve menus, etc. Also Paul is very open with his personal life situation which has slowed down development considerably.
This probably would have been better for Paul to explain but I just want to stress that this game isn't dead.

Sean has it right... the game is definitely not dead.  I worked on it for 5-6 hours even just last night.  There's just a huge amount of stuff to get done to get this new engine ready and as Sean hinted at, lots of life problems getting in the way.

That's been discussed in other posts so I won't drag this one down again. :)

I can only do what I can do.
And you're doing great.

ebag, it is hard for everyone to realize how much the extra work being put in now is helping the rest of the game in the future.
