I'm afraid I haven't been able to get on at all in recent weeks. Every time I try to connect I get the UDP error.

Thanks for the advice folks.

I've downloaded GameMaker Studio and I'll run through the tutorial tonight and then with him sometime over the weekend

Paul: IdeaVentions seems to be only in the US but I'll have a look around for something similar in the UK

Will let you know how we get on Smiley

OK, my 7 year old has in his head that his dad (i.e. me) and he are going to write a computer game. Apparently because I work with computers and am a bit technical then I should also know how to code! (LOL)

I do have a logical mind and did a bit of Pascal MANY years ago at college and am currently learning SQL.

From a 7 year old's perspective his expectation is that we can get started by deciding what the monsters will look like! I'm a bit more realistic Smiley

So, given the plethora of different languages out there, what would your advice be on where to start? Python seems a popular starting point. Or Java?

Many thanks,

Paul

Well I was out with my astronomy group last night. We had 12 scopes, the largest being 14" aperture, but none of us managed to positively ID the asteroid. It was just too faint.
One of the group did manage to capture it on a long exposure (2 minutes) through his scope from home though:

Amazing how off-topic this off-topic post has gone lol

Off out tonight with the scope to spot the asteroid. Smiley
10  General Category / General Discussion / Re: Role Model on: February 13, 2013, 04:32:02 PM
I'm sure that Paul would agree with me that being seen as a role model for kids is quite an achievement.

It's difficult to become a role model to your own kids at certain periods in their development as they only see you as that 'embarrassing adult' but oddly enough other people's kids can still see you as someone to aspire to.

Sorry for calling you 'kids' but mine are 7, 20 and 21 and to me they are still all kids. Oddly my age equals the sum of my kids ages! (for this year only obviously)

I'm all for the promotion of technologists and scientists far above the modern day role models of sports, movie and media 'stars' and don't get me started on reality TV 'stars'!

Cheers

Paul

It's not going to enter the atmosphere so it won't burn up. It'll pass by between the upper atmosphere and the moon's orbit.

The earth's atmosphere extends to about 10,000 km above the surface. The asteroid's closest point is due to be about 27,700 km

It will, however be passing through a region where there are satellites. All the operators of the sats have been informed though.

Near-Earth Asteroid 2012 DA14 to Pass Within 27,700 kms
R.A. 12h 11m; Dec. +12° 44′; Magnitude 7.35
Astrometric information valid 20:00GMT/UTC. <-- NB this is GMT/Universal Time so you'll need to convert for your own timezone

The small asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass within about 27,700 kilometres of our planet's surface on February 15, 2013. Although its size is not well determined, this near-Earth asteroid is thought to be about 45 meters in diameter. Asteroid 2012 DA14 will pass well inside the geosynchronous satellite ring located 35,786 kilometres above the equator.

If you have some binoculars, have a wee go at spotting it!

You'll need to amend this first one for your own location and time zone

Sounds fine to me Paul.

Maybe I'm missing the point but you mentioned that it could lead to partial trees in places e.g. leaves floating in the air. Wouldn’t the leaves just fall to the earth due to the new physics?

btw I wouldn’t be averse to starting from scratch again

Or you could:

  • change your OS language/locale to English
  • re-install the game
  • change back to Turkish

Would that work?

Did you try running the server as administrator in Win7?
