106  General Category / Tech Support / Recommended/Minimum Server Spec? on: November 25, 2012, 04:09:02 AM
I'm intending to stick a server on my lan so that my son and his local friends can connect and play together.

I know how to run the server, admin it and do the port forwarding on the router.

Just looking for some info on the recommended spec of the system to run it on? It's most likely I'll run it on a linux (Ubuntu) box but don't want to put it on a machine that's overpowered and will use too much electricity so just really looking for the recommended and minimum specs required.

Getting the hardware isn’t a problem Smiley

Thanks

Paul

Just wondering, when the next update comes along, will we need to start our buildings again or will the worlds we've created just be enhanced?

Thanks

Yes Paul, I'm hosting on my lan for my son and myself to play on,

I've sussed it out now.
~giveprop ID stronghold/town/city

I've noted down the coords of the various things we've built so that we can find them easily too.

A question about ~respawn and ~TP though. Are these only available to one admin?
I am admin and can use them but I made Daniel admin also but nothing happens when he uses these commands
He's on a Windows machine as opposed to my Ubuntu machine on which the server & my client instance are running
~escape does work for him though

Cheers

Paul

Thanks for the replies

Is there a list of server admin options somewhere?

Just things that I've found and probably have been reported already but here they are:

1: After badge revocation the player can still create/delete within the owners stronghold.
2: You can use the Map key to automate movement. Hold W, press M, release W, Release M - Auto-walk is on until W is hit again. (works for Shift-W and Jump too )
3: (I know this is pedantic but) you can't see stars in front of the shaded/obscured part of the moon in real life so it shouldn’t be possible in game.
4: Only 1 stronghold can be created, nothing else.

Suggestion: Maybe the addition of a 'Quicklight' button to create a light while not changing the block-type would be good.
& Teleports would be great!

Any idea when the next rev is due out? My 7 year old son is happy creating stuff but I'd like to 'do' more.

Thanks Smiley

What I've done is created a script that copies my sons singleplayer database to my machine into the server directory so that any changes he has made in SP mode are still there when I get back from work to play MP with him

Then when we finish MP mode I copy the database from the server to his machine again so that the changes made in MP mode are in his SP version for the next time he plays it.

Seems to work fine Smiley

I do wish I had a teleport though lol

I've upgraded the old ATi card on my wife's pc so that my son can play on that one on multiplayer with me Smiley

Copied the database to the server folder and confirmed that his buildings are all present and correct.

I'll set up a cronjob to copy his singleplayer modified db across to the server so that we can then start to work together when I get in from work

Cheers

Paul

p.s. Had to create new users on the server to get logged on though. Where are the users stored (so that I can purge out the old ones)

Thanks folks,

Unnaturallife: No, I'm not using windows (I'm on Ubuntu) but I've now backed up the db file

Paul: I hadn’t realised that the world was generated based on a seed number. I get it now Smiley

My question about the manual was really for things like properties, stronghold and badges, can't find any reference to their usage.

If Game mode does nothing yet, is the only server mode 'build'? If so, what is the point of multiplayer or is it just that MP gaming options are in future releases?

p.s. an 'undo' key would be fantastic Smiley
p.p.s. so would the ability to rebind keys (son is finding 'wasd' awkward)

Thanks

Paul

I realise that the single player map is saved automatically on exit but is there any way to change the map which is in use?

The reason for asking is that my son (7yo) has spent a lot of making buildings etc and I wanted to be able to back up his world in case it got corrupted or spoiled by another user.

Secondly, does the multiplayer mode (if run on the same machine) use the same map? if not, can I make it do so?

Is there a manual for the commands? I can get into 'G'ame mode but don't know what to do Smiley

Thanks

Paul
