More polygons doesn't necessarily mean more lag. Like with the Outerra engine the world is made out of a ridiculous amount of polygons. You just need a good engine to process it.

Of all the things that will cause low frame rates, triangle count is probably the least likely cause.

Minecraft has a debug info screen that tells you where most of the lag comes from. Usually it's from chunk updating (Like how Mythruna has leaf instead of chunk).
