For the curious, here is the "making of thread" I just posted to the JME forums:
http://hub.jmonkeyengine.org/forum/topic/mythruna-far-trees-behind-the-scenes/

...lots more screen shots of the steps along the way it took to get to that.

And here's the screen shots thread I posted to that forum, also:
http://hub.jmonkeyengine.org/forum/topic/december-monthly-wip-screenshot-thread/#post-253311

...more screen grabs in that one trying to explain to the non-Mythrunians why this is cool.

Awesome trees in the background Cheesy can't wait until the next update! When do you think it can be released?

Thanks guys.

I was testing some more stuff and I noticed an odd stand of trees off in the distance.  They are in the center of this pic right near the cursor orb... contrasting against the rising sun:

The thing that I thought was weird is that normally by the time a forest would be distance-clipped like that, they are so small that we wouldn't see them.  So I thought something funny was going on with clipping.  So I went to investigate.

I ran at an angle (1.4 x run speed) for about 3 hours in game time to eventually come to this:

You can see by the stats that it's about 1 km away.

That would explain it.  Just an isolated little string of small islands.

In the left of that image, off in the distance, is the familiar "spawn bay" where we started.  A more direct shot:

Really far away.

I should also note that all of these screens were shot at 64 m clip.  I find that it's actually an enjoyable experience these days and makes my testing faster.  So I often run at 64 m clip now.

I agree.  Some of the views are breathtaking.

It's not without its issues.  There is still the weird thing where the low res terrain sometimes shows where it shouldn't and since the low res terrain is not sampled as often as real terrain, sometimes the trees are floating in mid air from certain angles.

...but the rest is so good, I'm more than willing to put up with those other things even if I never figure out how to fix them.  (And I have ideas anyway)

Paul, just wondering if you could also give us a nice picture of the view at 192m clip. Also, are you replacing the realistic-background terrain, considering what the first picture compares to the second?

I don't understand the question.  The different between the first and second pic is that I added trees.

There is a picture at 192 clip (and comparisons) on the first linked thread on the JME forums.

One word: OMG (Or Tek(Hehe)nically 3). More words: Wow. I knew you could do the trees! WOO! Looks 1000x better!!!!!! Makes blockscape look stupid now. They've been having issues with trees forever, MUCH MUCH worse than your simple issues that I didn't even notice XD! Like the trunks completely disappear for no reason.
