I'm intending to stick a server on my lan so that my son and his local friends can connect and play together.

I know how to run the server, admin it and do the port forwarding on the router.

Just looking for some info on the recommended spec of the system to run it on? It's most likely I'll run it on a linux (Ubuntu) box but don't want to put it on a machine that's overpowered and will use too much electricity so just really looking for the recommended and minimum specs required.

Getting the hardware isn’t a problem Smiley

Thanks

Paul

I would think the newer Atom processors would do the job. But there aren't any written out minimum requirements let alone minimum server requirements. If you have other LAN servers at home I would try it out on one of them to see how well it is handled.

Future, you wouldn't understand. An enthusiast would never pass up an excuse to build a computer Smiley

I guess what I'm really asking is:

What's the recommended amount of RAM for running a server under linux? as I might just run it on a low spec laptop with a couple of gig of RAM
(Assuming maybe 4 - 8 players max)

Would it be necessary to run it on a machine with a gigabit NIC?

Thanks

I wish I had your answer but this is a question for Paul (Speed).

But, I know a Minecraft server could do 4-8 people with 1 gig of RAM. Perhaps Mythruna would be similar.

Right now the server is extremely light weight.  I used to run my server capped at 256 meg but there is a memory leak somewhere that makes it climb after a while.  I upped my max to 1 gig just to keep from having to reset it more than once a week or so.

There is no point in a gig-e NIC except for personal reasons.  After all, your connection to the internet is probably much slower than that.  Right now the networking is pretty light also and I don't expect it to go up much.

RAM usage will definitely go up but 1 gig will be the effective max that I target.  I hope to be able to host something like 64 players on a decent server (my current target spec being this 6 core AMD with 3 gig RAM) so I'd expect just about any reasonably modern computer to be able to run a server for just 4-8 simultaneous players.

Will a 4 core i7 at 6 gigs run better? (1.6-2.8 Ghz) Lol 1.6...

It shouldn't matter much.

Just FYI, I have my server running on an Athlon 2800+ / 3GB RAM / Ubuntu 11.04 and it's working great.

Yeah, I built two of them... for around $800 each 1.5 years ago.  One was a little more because I stuck a Blu-ray burner in it.
