Some people might be curious about the process I use to paint a new texture.  Usually I have something in mind already and then go out on the web to find some nice reference material to get ideas.

You can see some of the reference images I found in this screen cap.  I load them into Photoshop so that I can see them while I work.  The middle workspace is my painted texture.

I looked at them for shape and coloring ideas as well as just plain inspiration.  I then hand painted some rocks, colored them and textured them, made sure they tiled, and so on.

The stone blocks in the corners are used to help me figure out where the edges of my center block are and so that I pick colors and textures that might work well with the stone material.  This "cross" configuration is one way to paint a tileable texture like this.  I cut the middle square out to make the actual texture.
