Actually, what I find amazing is that we can do so much with something we understand so little about.  As compared to the rest of the body, "knowledge-wise", anything to do with the neural system we're only slightly above leeches and blood-letting... metaphorically speaking.  Medical science knows some tricks for working around inside of it without really understanding how it functions.
