Title: My Public Server
Post by: pspeed on October 09, 2011, 06:02:35 AM
I will go ahead and add my public server information here until there is a better place.

I have a host mythruna on game-host.org (put them together as usual) on port 4234.

This same host also has a status web page where you can see recent server activity, most active players, etc...
http://<same host as above>/status

Please avoid posting the actual URL to the server.  From this experience this can increase the hacker traffic to my server by 200-300 times the normal amount... and I just can't cope with that.

Plenty (a couple thousand accounts worth actually) do manage to connect... so I wonder what the error is.

Did it pop up an error message?  Maybe you can post the client.log or error-####.log or something.

The folks who have had problems with this, it generally turns out to either be a local firewall issue or that they have my IP address blocked for some reason.

I played on my own server and when I type in game-host.org then the port to 4234 it says "Unable to connect". I don't get it.

You mean to connect to my server again?   Don't forget the mythruna on the beginning of game-host.org.

Soon I will add a server list so it won't be a one or the other sort of thing.

If you wait a bit after clicking connect before clicking login and it still comes up with this message then it is accurately telling you that something about your firewall or internet connection is preventing the game from running.  The game won't run in this case.

The default server is hosted on game-host.org... and is mythruna.  Put it together and you get the host but I don't want to post the host name here.  PM me if that isn't clear.

When Mythruna hits ALPHA: make a forum category under "Player's Corner" or "General Categories" and maybe call it "Servers" so anyone who wants can post about their server ;)

Yeah, maybe.  Also by then, users with registered server accounts can list on the mythruna listing service.

First off, you should start a new thread, as that is nowhere near on-topic.
But it will be a role-crafting game. Mostly RPG, but in a generated sandbox.

It depends.  You can see the most recent traffic on the status page mentioned in the first post of this thread.

I get people from all over: US, Germany, Russia, Poland, Australia, New Zealand, etc..  Some days are busier than others.

First of all, you most likely won't need administrator privileges.
To play the game, Create a folder on the desktop called "Mythruna" and open up the zip file you downloaded (it should be called mythruna-20120627-windows.zip, or something like that).
Then highlight everything that is inside the zip file and drag the contents into the mythruna folder you created.
At this point, you should see a lib folder and a file called "Mythruna-20120627.exe". Double click that .exe and you will see a window pop up that lets you choose "Ok" to start playing the game.
If you have a powerful enough graphics card, you should be home free from there.

Yeah, griefers destroy anything that isn't protected by property.

Just a quick question, will you ever do a "Server World Reset"? I am guessing you would not, because it would make A LOT of people mad, and there are some magnificent structures there.

So how active is multiplayer at the moment?
I've only really met one person, so now we kinda hang out while building islands connected by a bridge, but that's all.
Once in a while someone logs in, but doesn't respond to any chat messages, or they're new and leave after a minute or so.
Still, I see a lot of buildings and properties around, so where is everybody?

It goes through spurts but it's probably been kind of slow lately since it's been so long since an update.

There used to be quite a few regulars even as recently as a few months ago but I think they finished all of their big projects and are waiting for something new to do.

Yeah, I've run oout of good space on Iron Island. I started building elsewhere but dont feel comfortable putting a bunch of effort into a griefable project. Plus Im ready to burn it all and start anew in the redesigned engin. Paul, even though i dont post it I think everyday about playing in the new mythruna. I love reading your updates even on the little crap you have been doing. It gives me that "It's right around the corner feeling".It's also good to know you are still at it.  I assume you already know this.

Thanks.

This is a particularly hard stretch.  The work is tedious, extremely detail-oriented, slow-going, etc. while also having such cool potential that it's way more fun to imagine it being done than to actually work on it.  Sort of like digging your own swimming pool by hand.  Standing there with your chin on the shovel, imagining swimming in the nice cool water, is way more short-term satisfying than actually doing the digging.

I also spend a lot of time trying to make the controls feel like they used to even though now it's based on actual physics forces.

By the way, I can give you a new property if you need it.  Or if you already had an extra one then I can expand it.

About that, how far are property requirements done?
As in, what are the requirements to upgrade/increase property?

Right now, the server admin grants additional properties or increases the max limit of property sizes.  On my server, that's me.

I base my decisions to increase size on how close you are to others, etc... and I base my decision to give out towns/cities based on the stuff you've done so far and the location you think you'd want the town.  It was a lot easier when I played more. :)

Have you built all the way down underground?
I'm currently in the process of filling up the space underneath my island, and then digging it out to remove the water so I have more building space nearby. I've already done one half, started the other part today.

1.) Join server (default public server is already entered)
2.) Click "Create New Account" and fill out the information
3.) Join server with your entered User Id (not display name) and Password.

It's funny... now that I have the monitor up all the time and can keep the server running if it starts acting funny, there is really quite a lot of activity for having been down so long.

I see half a dozen logins on a typical day and there have been a bunch today.  I even got to chat with one player as an admin.

I just think it's cool that even after all this time, people are still finding the server and playing for a while.

And the mythruna servers link sends me to a website called listforge, where I could not see anything that said mythruna on it.

I'm searching for it cause of that thing you said on the first page of this thread.

"This same host also has a status web page where you can see recent server activity, most active players, etc..." I believe you were referring to game-host.org so I was looking for this area where I could see who is online and stuff.

Couldn't find it.

You mean... the one mentioned in the very first post of this thread:
http://<same host as above>/status

Meaning...
http://mythruna.game-host.org/status

That one?

The one that still works fine for me?

I used to try to keep the exact address off the internet because every time I mention it the potential exploit log on my systems goes through the roof.  But I guess it's too hard to figure out without an exact address so there it is.

http://mythruna.game-host.org/status

I would say in general, its probably not that hard if you got the patience to figure it out.  I've been too swamped with real life to be able to add two and two together lately.
Total brain fart. forgot my car keys in the house twice last week.

Im not really not on the ball with things right now. I'm sure I would have figured it out eventually, but thanks for helping me out. Been mentally drained when I come home from work for days now. Brain doesn't like to function on it's relaxing time it seems.

mythruna.game-host.org

is this game server still active!

I had to take it down some time back to steal a part.  I've since (finally!) put the part back but I haven't reconnected it to the network yet.

I hope to have it back online soon but I don't know what "soon" means exactly... and it's all relative.  Since someone has complained again maybe I will finally get to it this weekend.

Sorry for the trouble.

No, sorry... not yet.

I lack a network cable and a port to stick it into... I'm thinking of moving the server to another location nearer a different switch/router.  I just haven't done it yet.

Not yet but now that I know there is someone still waiting, I will put it higher in my priorities.  Thanks for bugging me about it... seriously.  :)

Whats the current server IP or Hostname?  ;D :D :)

It's built into the game.  It's the default address when you try to connect.

I try to keep it off of the internet because in the past when my IP gets posted to the internet it increases the frequency of hack attempts on my firewall.

When you run the game you get a menu like this:

Then click "Multiplayer"

Then with the default server in the box, click connect:

Then you get a screen like this:

Then if you already have a user and password on my server, you can login.  If you don't then you can create a new account.

To help more, I will need to know which part of this process didn't work for you.
